ODYSSEY -긴 여행- 민영치 작곡

해외에 살다보면 문득 고향의 산하를 그립게 생각할 때가 있다. ODYSSEY는 내가 일본에 살고 있을 때, 한국을 생각하며 작곡한 곡이다. 한국의 산하나 농촌 풍경. 먼 곳에서 고향 생각을 할 때, 마음이 복잡하면서도 그립고 아름다운 추억이 살아난다. 그것은 아름답게 있어 주었으면 하는 소망일지도 모르지만 음악이나 작곡은 그 자유로운 자신의 생각을 허락해 준다. 현실 세계에서 떨어져, 일단 환상의 고향에…
ODYSSEY는 전 3 악장으로 형성됀다. 제1 악장은, 먼 해외에 출발할 때의 불안이나 이제 펼쳐질 새로운 세계에서의 만남을 상상했다. 제2 악장은 해외에서 생각 나는 고향이다. 먼 곳에 있기 때문이야말로 께다른 고향의 아름다움도 있다.
제3 악장은 다양한 리듬의 변화를 구사하여 갈등이나 고통을 표현하면서도, 마지막으로는 목가적인 고향에 회귀하는 모습을 표현했다.
전 악장을 통해 한국의 특징적인 리듬과 타악기 “장구”의 음색을 최대한 살리는 점에 신경을 썼다. 제1 악장의 리듬은, “굿거리(느린 12/8 박자)”라는 리듬. 제2 악장은 무속 장단인 “동해안 별신굿”의 느린 4/4 박자와 “자진모리(빠른 12/8 박자)”, 제3 악장은 “휘모리(빠른 4/4 박자)”를 중심으로 구성하였다.
내가 해외 활동을 통해 생각하는 것은, 전통음악이나 민속음악은 그 특유성과 속성으로 외국인이나 일반사람에게는 이해하기 어려울 때가 있다. 그것이야말 매력이기도 하지만, 고민은 어떻게 하면 한국 전통음악의 매력을 많은 사람들에게, 또한 세계에서도 알릴 수 있을까라는 것이었다. 어떻게 하면 사람들은 즐거워 할까. 오로지 그것만을 생각해 왔고 앞으로도 그것이 나의 인생의 명제가 될 것이다. 나의 여행은 더 계속될 것이다.

ODYSSEY―Long Journey―written by Min Yongchi

When I live in another country, I suddenly miss the mountains and rivers in my hometown. ODYSSEY was written while I was living in Japan, recalling the mountains, rivers, and rural landscapes in Korea. As I think of our hometown from far away, it evokes mixed feelings, nostalgia, and also brings back beautiful memories. Although it may be just a personal wish that my homeland should be beautiful, music allows me to dream of it, forgetting the real world and entering into my fantasy home for a while...
ODYSSEY consists of a total of three movements. The first movement was written imagining the anxiety of leaving for a distant foreign country and future encounters waiting for the traveler in the new world. The second movement is about the home one remembers in a foreign land. The beauty of the hometown, which is recognized only from a distance, is expressed in this work.
The third movement was written using intricate changes of rhythm to express conflict and pain, and imagining a return to the idyllic hometown in the end.
Throughout the entire movement, I tried to bring out the characteristic Korean rhythm and the sound of the percussion instrument Janggu. The rhythm of the first movement is a Kukkori (slow 12-8 time) rhythm. The second movement is based on the shamanistic rhythm of slow 4-4 time called East Coast Pyolsinkut and Jajinmori (fast 12-8 time), and the third movement on Hwimori (fast 4-4 time).
Learning from my performance experience in other countries, I think that traditional and folk music is often not well understood by the local audience, but this is because of its uniqueness. How can I offer the attractions of traditional Korean music to many people, and how can I entertain them? This is all I have been thinking about. My journey is still far from over.
